I buy both coins & bars & numis. First passion is numis. Spanish-American metal detected, slabbed FHs, & D. Bust 1795- 03. Needless to say, few and far between. I cut the 100ozs into quarters and melt them for jewelry. Same with near spot gold. Cut them to sterling or 18k for strength respectively & add gems,, or not. Also for color white, green, yellow or red. 100 bars are $2 over spot round here except antique Johnson – Mats & Englehards.
You went with the 100 oz bar, nice! … Just picked up a 100 oz. Silver towne bar myself today. It may be second hand, but I could not beat the $1.50 per oz. over spot price.
This year i got the three graces 100 oz bar, was so impressed with it i got a 2nd one. I think these bars are amazing. Congrats on yours.
You have to pay vat tax when you buy and CGT when you sell. Bars are not exempt in uk
@Backyard Bullion I just buy RM coins and save myself the hassle. Silver is Silver whether its a bar or a coin. I don’t like CGT since you are paying for not making anything. If you do a £100 investment in 2022 and it rises to £200 in a 10 year period on paper you’ve doubled your money but if inflation goes up by more than 100% in that time you’ve actually lost spending power. Then they want you to pay more just because.
Silver and gold are not about making money like that though, they are the protection for your wealth. In the case you gave that is exactly what gold and silver are designed to do. Don’t think of them as a traditional investment.
@Backyard Bullion I don’t think of them as a traditional investment. i see them as wealth protection. If the money put into gold in 2022 has the same spending power 10 years later I struggle to see why we must pay CGT and reduce it to the point of loss. Just because its gone up in face value doesn’t mean we’ve made anything from it. I see metals the same as you, I’m just questioning why we should pay CGT when we haven’t made any gain from a spending power perspective. I know there’s an allowance of 12k but I’m really talking about CGT in general.
Taxes happen, it’s fine by me, I like being a productive member of society. If I have to pay CGT on something that is a good thing as it means I made a nice profit. Also remember the CGT is only payable on the money above the £12k or £24k threshold. If I make £25k profit we pay only tax on £1000 as a married couple. It’s not a problem for 99% of people.
@Backyard Bullion You haven’t made profit since it just keeps in line with inflation. Its just wealth protection. If it was profit you’d be able to sell your small home for 300k and put the money into gold, it would rise to 900k over a 10 year period and you’d be able to buy a bigger house. As its not profit you cannot do this in reality, all you can do is buy a similarly sized home for 900k. You are no better off, you might as well have kept the home because now you owe taxes which may mean you must buy a home smaller than what you sold. Obviously this is hypothetical and the figures are not accurate but you get my point.

Buy the type that most suits your goals. If you think the financial system is about to collapse and you want something to barter with, buy some coins. if you are just buying as much as you can for as cheap as you can and just going to dump it all after your goals are met, then by the lowest premium bars you can get your hands on. If you want to cover all possibilities, get a bunch of fractional, 1, 10 oz coins and bars and youre good to go. Also worthy of note, See what your local dealer will accept. some get a bit funny about buying large 100 oz bars, or will do so under spot to hedge their bets. Know your exit strategy.
I just got my first ever silver purchase. Germania as well but i got the 10oz. I love it… Idk why people go crazy over RCM and stuff I get its premium or easy to sell but I just cant bring myself to pay that much extra. Maybe I am just a newb ^.^ I am really considering getting a 100oz if I see it at a good price

Ok, first off – what’s wrong with German silver? Second – this isn’t German, it’s Germanic (referring to all the Germanic people of north eastern Europe. Maybe you should explain your a) slightly racist comment and b) learn geography/history?

A major advantage of a bar is that you can put your phone on it while it charges. The silver massively absorbs the heat allowing your phone to charge substantially quicker. A silver bar is a great heat sink.

Just ordered the kilo bar from them I have a week to dream about it. love silver this is the biggest investment I can make this year. I had a silver town kilo bar before and had to sell it to survive when things got hard good thing to have when times get tuff you can sell it very easy and I made over 100 in profit when I had to sell. 100 OZ CONGRADULATIONS TO YOU.
Just to say I have been buying off eBay because they haven’t been charging tax on silver and gold, I don’t know if that’s normal but I think it’s awesome
